Recognitions Of Spring

As winter begins its decline and time
pursues its perpetual march thru our world,
the warmth of the sun begins to climb
and blossoms of spring become unfurled.

The frogs and bears and nocturnal skunks
Begin to abandon their long hibernations;
Canadian geese emit their migratory honks
while human snowbirds end winter vacations.

The season of income taxes is still at hand
and families in gay-colored suits and bonnets
watch an Easter parade with its marching band,
and wonder if now there’s a tax upon it.

Encouraging signs of the warmth approaching
appear in the form of our roadside trash,
more dieters, joggers, and baseball coaching,
an increase of business at the local carwash.

Alterations arrive in the form of robins,
mowers and tillers, night-crawlers and bugs,
house cleaning, curtains hung by clothespins,
highways full of potholes and driveways of mud.

The fever of spring brings out young lovers,
rosebuds, dandelions, daffodils and crocus;
the snow-blower is stashed, the grass recovers;
tank-top and bikini shopping seems the new focus.

Trowels and trimmers, hoses and hoes reappear,
starter trays fill open windows to capture the sun.
Summer tires are mounted, studded snows disappear
and marbles show up for some schoolyard fun.

For a reminder we get some poor man’s fertilizer
on the first of May to make our may-basket hang
a challenge before we take our tranquilizer.
As I dozed off to rest a bit, the doorbell rang.

May Baskets On You!!
